Voting YES on Issue 6
Supports Sylvania Seniors

Sylvania Township Trustees unanimously voted to replace the expiring 5-year, .42-mill levy, which has been in place since 2015, with a new 5-year, .50-mill levy on the November 2025 ballot. Issue 6 seeks to replace Sylvania Senior Center’s levy with a new one to reflect 10 years of rising costs and a growing demand.

In line with the U.S. average, 1 in 4 Sylvania residents is 60+, with approximately 12,000 Americans turning 60 each day (Meals on Wheels/U.S. Census Bureau). This figure is part of the larger U.S. aging trend as a significant number of baby boomers reach retirement age.

Sylvania Senior Center averages over 300 participants per day. In the first eight months of 2025, SSC has already experienced an 87% participation increase over 2024 with the addition of 511 new participants. The services provided by Sylvania Senior Center will become increasingly important and necessary as America and Sylvania experience a historic rise in active, engaged older adults.

The Facts

The modest increase being requested will help keep the Sylvania Senior Center open, staffed, and offering life-enriching programs for our community members aged 55 and above.

  • The Sylvania Senior Center Levy is a 5-year levy that must be voted on every 5 years.

  • To help sustain operations, Sylvania Senior Center participants pay a small fee for some activities.

  • Lunch is offered at an affordable price, giving participants not only a healthy meal but also valuable social time that combats isolation.

  • Sylvania Senior Center hasn't received any increase in funding since 2015, even as program participation has surged. Full-time staff have been reduced from 11 to 5 to make ends meet, all while expanding our services to meet the growing needs of our 55+ community.

  • The cost of the current 5-year, .42-mill. levy is $11.60 per $100,000 of home value. The proposed 5-year, .50-mill levy would be $17.50 per $100,000 of home value.

Helping Local Seniors

The funds generated from the passage of Issue 6 will be strategically allocated to vital programs that provide support and recreational opportunities for participants aged 55 and above in our community. Together, we can empower them to thrive and enjoy life with dignity.

Connecting Hearts
and Seniors

The passing of Issue 6 will enhance the lives of our cherished Sylvania seniors. Supporting the Sylvania Senior Center is crucial for fostering a vibrant community where our elderly citizens can thrive and engage with one another. Through this initiative, we aim to provide essential resources and programs that cater to their needs, ensuring they enjoy a fulfilling and active lifestyle. Join us in our mission to uplift our seniors and contribute to the heart of our community.

For many of our participants, the Senior Center is not just a place to go—it’s their reason for getting up in the morning. As one participants proclaimed, “I don’t live here, but I come alive here!”

Every day inside the Senior Center, something remarkable happens. Laughter echoes from the dining room, art and music spark new passions, friendships bloom, and lives are enriched with connection and care.

This small levy increase keeps Sylvania Senior Center open, staffed, and offering life-enriching programs for our older adults.
